Dandalo, Enrico
   Doge of Venice (q.v.) from 1192-1205 who led the Fourth Crusade (q.v.) that conquered Constantinople (q.v.) in 1204. Niketas Choniates (q.v.) and some modern historians view him as a villain who plotted the capture of the city. Whether plotted for or not, through the Partitio Romaniae (q.v.) Dandalo established Venetian economic hegemony in the eastern Mediterranean (q.v.).
